*

“In my life I always had tigers”. (In my life there have always been tigers.)

“When I read, as a child, The Jungle Books, they did not stop me grieving that Shere Khan was the villain of the piece, not the hero’s friend”. (When I read, as a child, The Jungle Books, it would grieve me without fail that Shere Khan was the villain of the fable, not the hero’s friend.)

Mấy lời “did not stop me grieving” nghe chút ít vụng về vì không biểu thị giọng tự nhiên của nguyên tác.

“I will not say this tiger that amazed me is more real than the others, since an oak is not more real than the shapes of a dream, but I would like to thank here our friend, this tiger of flesh and blood my senses perceived that morning and whose image comes back as those tigers come back in books”. (I will not say this tiger that amazed me is more real than the others, since an oak is not more real than the shapes of a dream, but I would like to thank here our friend for that tiger of flesh and blood my senses perceived that morning and whose image comes back as do the tigers in the books.)

Toàn là những ví dụ không dẫn đến sự hiểu lầm hoặc là nghiêm trọng hoặc là đáng kể, chẳng hạn không phải “this Platonic tiger” mà phải là “that Platonic tiger”: “ese” là “that”, còn “este” mới là “this”, hay trường hợp của “and not stripes” (“pero no las rayas”) trong câu “sólo puedo contestar que las manchas me desgradan, pero no las rayas” (“I can only respond that spots displease me and not stripes”): Borges dùng từ “pero” (“but”) tuy đã có thể dùng từ “y” (“and”).

And the craft that createth a semblance

MORRIS: Sigurd the Volsung, 1876

Pienso en un tigre. La penumbra exalta

la vasta Biblioteca laboriosa

y parece alejar los anaqueles;

fuerte, inocente, ensangrentado y nuevo,

mares y los desiertos del planeta;

The Other Tiger

[And the craft that createth a semblance Morris: Sigurd The Volsung (1876)]

I think of a tiger.

The gloom here makes

The vast and busy Library seem lofty

And pushes the shelves back;

Strong, innocent, covered with blood and new,

It will move through its forest and its morning

And will print its tracks on the muddy

Margins of a river whose name it does not know

(In its world there are no names nor past

Nor time to come, only the fixed moment)

And will overleap barbarous distances

And will scent out of the plaited maze

Of all the scents the scent of dawn

And the delighting scent of the deer.

Between the stripes of the bamboo I decipher

Its stripes and have the feel of the bony structure

That quivers under the glowing skin.

In vain do the curving seas intervene

And the deserts of the planet;

From this house in a far-off port

In South America, I pursue and dream you,

O tiger on the Ganges’ banks.

In my soul the afternoon grows wider and I reflect

That the tiger invoked in my verse

Is a ghost of a tiger, a symbol,

A series of literary tropes

And memories from the encyclopaedia

And not the deadly tiger, the fateful jewel

That, under the sun or the varying moon,

In Sumatra or Bengal goes on fulfilling

Its round of love, of idleness and death. To the symbolic tiger I have opposed

The real thing, with its warm blood,

That decimates the tribe of buffaloes

And today, the third of August, ’59,

Stretches on the grass a deliberate

Shadow, but already the fact of naming it

And conjecturing its circumstance

Makes it a figment of art and no creature

Living among those that walk the earth.

We shall seek a third tiger. This

Will be like those others a shape

Of my dreaming, a system of words

A man makes and not the vertebrate tiger

That, beyond the mythologies,

Is treading the earth. I know well enough

That something lays on me this quest

Undefined, senseless and ancient, and I go on

Seeking through the afternoon time

The other tiger, that which is not in verse.

Dreamtigers

Borges, Jorge Luís, Prosa Completa, vol.3, Bruguera, Barcelona 1985, p.213

bản dịch của Mildred Boyer

Dreamtigers

In my childhood I was a fervent worshiper of the tiger: not the jaguar, the spotted “tiger” of the Amazonian tangles and the isles of vegetation that float down the Paraná, but that striped, Asiatic, royal tiger, that can be faced only by a man of war, on a castle atop an elephant. I used to linger endlessly before one of the cages of the zoo; I judged vast encyclopedias and books of natural history by the splendor of their tigers. (I still remember those illustrations: I who cannot rightly recall the brow or the smile of a woman.) Childhood passed away, and the tigers and my passion for them grew old, but still they are in my dreams. At that submerged or chaotic level they keep prevailing. And so, as I sleep, some dream beguiles me, and suddenly I know I am dreaming. Then I think: This is a dream, a pure diversion of my will; and now that I have unlimited power, I am going to cause a tiger. Oh, incompetence! Never can my dreams engender the wild beast I long for. The tiger indeed appears, but stuffed or flimsy, or with impure variations of shape, or of an implausible size, or all too fleeting, or with a touch of the dog or the bird.

El oro de los tigres

Hasta la hora del ocaso amarillo

Cuántas veces habré mirado

Al poderoso tigre de Bengala

Ir y venir por el predestinado camino

Detrás de los barrotes de hierro,

Sin sospechar que eran su cárcel.

Después vendrían otros tigres,

El tigre de fuego de Blake;

Después vendrían otros oros,

El metal amoroso que era Zeus,

El anillo que cada nueve noches

Engendra nueve anillos y éstos, nueve,

Y no hay un fin.

Con los años fueron dejándome

Los otros hermosos colores

Y ahora sólo me quedan

La vaga luz, la inextricable sombra

Y el oro del principio.

Oh ponientes, oh tigres, oh fulgores

Del mito y de la épica,

Oh un oro más precioso, tu cabello

Que ansían estas manos

Borges, Jorge Luís, Obra Poética, Emecé Editores, Buenos Aires 1977, p.409

The Gold of the Tigers

Until the hour of the yellow twilight

How often will I have seen

the powerful Bengal tiger

come and go along the predestined path

behind the iron bars

unsuspecting they were his prison.

Afterward there would be other tigers,

the tiger of fire by Blake;

afterward there would be other gold,

the loving metal which was Zeus,

the ring which every nine nights

engenders nine rings, and these, nine more,

without end.

With the years the other beautiful colors

forsook me, leaving me

with the vague light,

the inextricable shadow,

and the gold of the beginning.

Oh dusks, oh tigers, oh radiance

of the myth and the epopee,

oh most precious gold, your hair

these hands long for

The Tiger

It came and went, delicate and fatal, charged with infinite energy, on the other side of the firm bars, and we all watched it. It was the tiger of that morning, in Palermo [1] , and the tiger of the Orient and the tiger of Blake, of Hugo and Shere Khan, and the tigers that were and will be and at the same time the archetypical tiger, since the indivual, in its case, is an entire species. We thought it bloodthirsty and lovely. Norah, a little girl, said: It’s made for love.

The Tigers Of Annam

For the Annamites, tigers or personified genies rule over the directions of space.

The Red Tiger presides over the south (which is on the upper part of the maps); it corresponds to summer and fire.

The Black Tiger presides over the north; it corresponds to winter and water.

The Blue Tiger presides over the east; it corresponds to spring and plants.

The White Tiger presides over the west; it corresponds to autumn and metals.

Above these Cardinal Tigers there is another Tiger, the Yellow Tiger, who governs the others and resides in the center, just like the Emperor is in the center of China and China is in the center of the world. (That’s why it’s called the Middle Kingdom; that’s why it occupies the center of the mapamundi drawn by Father Ricci S.J. at the end of the 16th century to instruct the Chinese.)

Laozi entrusted the Five Tigers with the mission to battle the demons. An Annamite prayer translated into French by Louis Cho Chod devotedly implores the aid of their unstoppable armies. This superstition is of Chinese origin; the sinologists speak of a White Tiger presiding over the remote region of the western stars. In the south, the Chinese placed a Red Bird; in the east, a Blue Dragon; in the north, a Black Turtle. Obviously the Annamites preserved the colors yet unified the animals.

The Bhils, a people in central India, believe in hells for tigers; the Malay know of a city in the middle of the jungle with rafters made of human bones, walls out of human skin, and eaves of human hair, built and inhabited by Tigers.
